“The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page.”
Hello again, I’ve listed some magazines, books and movies, that I have found to be inspirational and useful.
Additionally, when I go out on a tour; I recommend specific material for the planned itinerary, and bring along music and readings, to inspire the travelers.
“1,000 Places to See Before You Die” (2003 and 2011) by Patricia Schultz.
“The Art of Travel” (2004) by Alain de Botton.
“The Complete Travel Detectives Bible” (2007) by Peter Greenburg.
“Travel Survival” (2005) by Rough Guide.
“The Art of Hunting with Birds” (De Arte Venandi cum Avibus) treatise in the 1240’s; by Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II. I wonder what a first edition goes for?
Some of my favorites:
Bill Bryson: “Neither Here Nor There”, “Notes From a Small Island”- about Britain; speaks New Jersey (i.e. curse words).
Robert Kaplan: “Balkan Ghosts”; history and its effect on politics.
Francis Mayes: from Cortona Italy; “Under a Tuscan Sun”, “Bella Tuscany”, “A Year in the World” are inspiring to me.
Peter Mayle: “A Year in Provence”, “French Lessons”; and many others.
Paul Theroux: trains; and more trains!
“The Dead Poets Society” (1989).
“Grand Canyon” (1991).
Any Merchant Ivory Productions movie.
