Fire lookouts have been disappearing from U.S. mountains at a rate of one per week over the last 50 years.
From a high of approximately 8,000, there are now less than 1,000; with only a few hundred actually staffed and working.
Where
Sequoia National Forest: Oak Flat Lookout; built in 1934 and closed in the mid-80s; 40 steps and 4,900 feet high in the Greenhorn Mountains. AWD transportation recommended.
No water, fridge, cooking tools and utensils. Bring your own sleeping bag and pillow.
And remember, you have to haul everything up the stairs; or use the pulley system!
Also, the toilet is 100 yards away. Yeah!!!
